'Spice Hut' - how's that for a restaurant's name? Clichéd, but good enough, isn't it? That's what I thought too. This 'Family Restaurant' at the Pattom junction, just around the corner of the Pattom-Marappalam turn had been in my cross-hairs for quite a while. Dinner with two friends at the 'Spice Hut' may not exactly be the ideal way to spend the Christmas eve. The restaurant is not too big, but is comfy. Unfortunately, that's the only good thing I can say about this place. To save you from the blabbering, here's a quick list of things we had: 1. Cream of tomato soup - Terrible 2. Chicken 65 - Even more so! 3. French fries - Horrible! 4. Roti - Not bad 5. Kadai Chicken - Pretty bad 6. Chicken kothuparotta - Not bad 7. Veg. kothuparotta - Not bad 8. Thiruvananthapuram doesn't have its fair share of coffee shops (read 'hangout place'). Traditionally, we've been addicted to tea rather than coffee, and that's probably for the better. Anyway, a new coffee shop opened yesterday at Ambalamukku (just after the junction, on the left hand side when you're coming from Peroorkada). It's called 'HotSpot Cafe' and it's all painted red (Cafe Coffee Day Redux?). Me and Viswajit stopped by today to check it out. To get decent review value (and for that alone, I swear!) we ordered quite a lot (at 6PM) of stuff. I'm sure the owner was pretty happy and wished the business were this good everyday. Being fresh new, they didn't have a menu card - but that didn't stop us from getting through our routine. അനിശ്ചിതത്വങ്ങള്‍ക്ക് വിരാമമിട്ടുകൊണ്ട് ഈ രഞ്ജിത്ത് ചിത്രം ശനിയാഴ്ച പുറത്തിറങ്ങി. 'ഫസ്റ്റ് ഡേ, ഫസ്റ്റ് ഷോ' എന്ന രീതിയൊന്നും ഇല്ലെങ്കിലും, ലോലന്റെ ഇനിഷിയേറ്റിവില്‍ അന്നുതന്നെ ഞങ്ങള്‍ ഈ സിനിമ കണ്ടു. 1957-ല്‍ കേരളത്തില്‍ നടന്ന ഒരു യഥാര്‍ത്ഥസംഭവത്തെ ആസ്പദമാക്കിയാണ് സിനിമയുടെ കഥ ഒരുക്കിയിരിക്കുന്നത്. കേരള സംസ്ഥാനം രൂപീകൃതമായി കമ്മ്യൂണിസ്റ്റ് മന്ത്രിസഭ അധികാരത്തില്‍ വന്നതിന് ശേഷം റെജിസ്റ്റര്‍ ആദ്യത്തെ കൊലക്കേസാണിത്. തെളിവുകളില്ലാത്തതിന്റെ പേരില്‍ അന്ന് കോടതി പ്രതികളെ വെറുതേ വിടുകയായിരുന്നു. ഈ സംഭവം ആസ്പദമാക്കി ടി.പി. രാജീവന്‍ എഴുതിയ നോവലാണ് അതേ പേരുള്ള ഈ സിനിമയുടെ കഥ. ഡല്‍ഹിയില്‍ നിന്ന് ഒരു കുറ്റാന്വേഷകന്‍ (മമ്മൂട്ടി) താന്‍ ജനിച്ച പാലേരി എന്ന ഗ്രാമത്തില്‍ അര നൂറ്റാണ്ട് മുന്‍പ് നടന്ന ഈ കൊലപാതകക്കഥയുടെ സത്യം അന്വേഷിക്കുന്നതാണ് സിനിമയുടെ പ്രമേയം. അങ്ങനെ രണ്ട് വ്യത്യസ്ത കാലഘട്ടങ്ങളിലൂടെയാണ് ഈ കഥയുടെ പ്രയാണം. കഥ പറയുമ്പോള്‍... I've been an active user of Wikipedia for years now. I've never contributed to this huge repository of free knowledge in terms of articles (barring a few minor corrections to some articles). But I'm a huge fan of this awesome project that as grown to be the 'largest and most popular general reference work on the Internet' (source: Wikipedia ). Recently, I noticed a banner asking for donations on the Wikipedia website. Their target seems to be 7.5M USD, and as of now, they are at 2.2M USD. I didn't hesitate and used my credit card to donate $10 (Rs.479 INR). I know it's not much, but it's the first time I've donated to any online project. Despite the little bit of negative publicity it's been getting lately, I hope the Wikipedia project continues to provide the world an open and free platform to share knowledge. Thank you, Wikipedia

മലയാളികള്‍ ഏറെ പ്രതീക്ഷയോടെ കാത്തിരുന്ന ഒരു ചിത്രമാണല്ലോ ലാല്‍ ജോസിന്റെ നീലത്താമര. 1979-ല്‍ ഇറങ്ങിയ ഇതേ പേരുള്ള ചിത്രത്തിന്റെ റീമേക്കാണിത്. എം.ടി. വാസുദേവന്‍ നായരുടെ കഥ/തിരക്കഥ. ഞാന്‍ പഴയ ചിത്രം കാണുകയോ കഥ വായിക്കുകയോ ചെയ്യാത്തതുകൊണ്ട് പ്രത്യേകിച്ച് മുന്‍വിധിയൊന്നുമില്ലാതെയാണ് ഈ ചിത്രം കാണാന്‍ പോയത്. ലാല്‍ ജോസ് ആയതുകൊണ്ട് ചിത്രം നന്നാകുമെന്നൊക്കെയുള്ള മിഥ്യാധാരണകള്‍ 'മുല്ല'യോടെ അവസാനിച്ചിരുന്നു. അഭിനേതാക്കള്‍ ഒരുവിധപ്പെട്ട എല്ലാവരും പുതുമുഖങ്ങള്‍. സംവൃത സുനില്‍, റിമ കല്ലിങ്കല്‍ എന്നിവര്‍ മാത്രമാണെന്ന് തോന്നുന്നു ഇതിലെ മുഖ്യധാരാ അഭിനേതാക്കള്‍. റിമ ഒഴികെ എല്ലാവരും നല്ല പ്രകടനം കാഴ്ചവച്ചിട്ടുണ്ട്. 'അര്‍ച്ചന കവി' എന്ന പുതുമുഖമാണ് നായികാ കഥാപാത്രത്തെ അവതരിപ്പിച്ചിരിക്കുന്നത്. ആ കഥാപാത്രം ആവശ്യപ്പെടുന്ന നിഷ്കളങ്കസൗന്ദര്യം ഉള്ള മുഖം. വളരേ നന്നായി അഭിനയിച്ചിട്ടുമുണ്ട്. ഈ ചിത്രത്തിലെ ഒരു ഹൈലൈറ്റ് ഈ നായിക തന്നെയാണ്. ഇനിയും ഇതുപോലത്തെ നല്ല അവസരങ്ങള്‍ ഈ നടിയെ തേടിവരുമെന്നുറപ്പ്. ഒപ്പം നന്ദനം എന്ന ആദ്യ ചിത്രത്തില്‍ മാത്രം തിളങ്ങിയ നവ്യാ നായരുടെ ഗതി ഉണ്ടാവില്ലെന്ന് പ്രതീക്ഷിക്കുന്നു.
