The Keys Hotel - Restaurant

"Spaces to work, places to play" is the tag line of the Keys Hotel (near Housing Board junction). Well, perhaps it's true, but this is definitely not a great place to dine. It's not a bad place, but it's not good enough, especially for the price.

The hotel lobby, though small, is beautifully designed. The ambiance gets you all cheered up when you walk in. This hotel apparently has American funding (see Berggruen Hotels) and that somewhat shows in their layout. The restaurant is on the mezzanine floor but the rest/washrooms are on the first floor. So, if you happen to want to wash your hands, you need to board the elevator (or lift?).

A buffet dinner here costs less than Rs.400, almost at par with SP Grand Days, my favourite restaurant in town. It was Kurian's treat (for his promotion, but who really cares, right? ;-) and we opted for the buffet, assuring ourselves that the à la carte menu is within arm's reach.

The food leaves nothing to brag about. It's as ordinary as it gets (for a restaurant/hotel of this stature) with not much choice. I'd say it's definitely not worth the money you pay, given that there are much better places in the city (SP Grand days and Maurya Rajadhani, for example). The tandoori chicken we ordered separately was nothing extraordinary.

The desserts were the worst part of the dinner. The most kanjoos selection of items. Vanilla & strawberry ice-creams, diced watermelon and fruits and something resembling chocolate brownies - that's all they had in the offering.

I'm guessing that dining is not one of the focus areas of this hotel group. So, if good food's what you crave for, look somewhere else.

Qt - Enabling qDebug messages and Qt Creator

I have been struggling for the past two hours to get qDebug() messages from my Qt 5 application to show up on the 'Application output' pane in Qt Creator IDE on Linux. Finally I found a solution, thanks to a user on Qt IRC channel. To enable log messages in Qt, do the following: Edit ~/.config/QtProject/qtlogging.ini and make sure it has: [Rules] *.debug=true qt.*.debug=false With this, I was getting the messages when I run the application from a terminal. But Qt Creator was not showing the qDebug() messages. To have the messages displayed in Qt Creator, do the following: Qt creator > Tools > Options > Kits, select your kit, find Environment, click change and add: QT_ASSUME_STDERR_HAS_CONSOLE=1 This fixed the problem for me. I thought I should document the full process here as Google wasn't getting me good leads. Dakhani Degh - Restaurant

Just had dinner at the [relatively] new Dakhani Degh restaurant at Chacka Jn., Thiruvananthapuram (just around the corner – towards the Petta-Palayam road). I had heard good words being spoken about the place and couldn't wait to check it out. The very thought that there's a potentially good untested (by me) restaurant in the city had made me restless. Talk about the pressures of being the local gourmand ;-) Dakhani Degh is a restaurant (probably a chain of restaurants) specializing in Hyderabadi cuisine - most notably the Hyderabadi Dum Biryani (or HDB - as these people call it). To be frank, I have never tasted authentic Hyderabadi Biryani, till now, that is. The word 'Dakhani' is derived from 'Deccan' - revealing the Hyderabad connection and 'Degh' is the copper vessel used for cooking (info from the menu card).
